Day 1 – Arrive in Addis Ababa
After arriving in Addis Ababa at Bole International Airport, you will be picked up by your guide and transferred to your hotel.
The Ethiopian capital is full of worthwhile sites, including the former palace of Haile Selassie, the Entete Mariam mountains, and the national museum, home to the three-and a-half million year old skeleton ‘Lucy’, one of the earliest hominids ever discovered. Overnight Addis Ababa.
Day 2 – Addis Ababa to Arba Minch
This morning we’ll drive to the pretty lakeside town of Arba Minch.
On the way we’ll pay a visit to members of the Dorze tribe, known for their tall, wood and bamboo huts and traditional weaving practices. We’ll also drop into the archeological sites at Tiya with its millennium-old tombs. Overnight Arba Minch.
Day 3 – Nechisar National Park
In the morning after breakfast, you will visit Nechisar National Park, a tract of savannah and woodland rich in wildlife that is one of the most scenic yet little-visited parks in Ethiopia.
The visit will include a boat-trip on Lake Chamo, where you’ll be able to see hippos and the famous crocodile market. Overnight Arba Minch.
Day 4 – Arba Minch to Jinka
En route to Jinka, we will visit several tribal groups including the Konso, renowned for their labyrinthine villages, terraced agriculture and skilful wood carvings.
We'll also stop off at the Konso Tower, a forest of red-rock pinnacles that provide staggering views over the Great Rift Valley. Overnight Jinka.
Day 5 – The southern tribes
In the morning we’ll visit the Mursi and Ari tribes.
Among the most distinctive of Ethiopia’s tribal groups, the Mursi are renowned for their violent stick-fighting sport and their extravagant body decorations which include ‘lip-discs’, circular plates of clay worn in the lower lip. Overnight Jinka.
Day 6 – The southern tribes
Continuing south, we’ll drive to Turmi where you will be visiting different tribes including the Demeka, Tsemey and Hamer.
The latter are particularly well-known for their body decorations and ochre-colored hair-styles. Overnight Turmi.
Day 7 – The southern tribes
In the morning drive to Karo, a hospitable tribal group that is always willing to share their customs and lifestyle with outsiders.
In the afternoon drive back to Turmi. If you are lucky, you might get to see members of the Hamer tribe perform Evangandi dance or ‘Jumping of the bulls’ initiation ceremony. Overnight Turmi.
Day 8 – The southern tribes
Driving between Turmi and Yeabello we’ll pass by some of Ethiopia’s greenest and most fertile scenery.
This region is well-known for its wild coffee, so be sure to sample some whenever you stop along the way. Overnight Yeabello.
Day 9 – The southern tribes
We’ll visit the Sidama tribe, whose lifestyle revolves around coffee production, before heading to Awassa, southern Ethiopia’s bustling regional capital, where you’ll be able to enjoy sunset from Lake Awassa. Overnight Awassa.
Day 10 – Awassa to Addis Ababa
In the morning you will visit Awassa’s chaotic and colorful fish market before heading back to Addis Ababa.
